Chapter Eighteen

Finn

Aaron was acting weird. Well, maybe not weird, just not… predictable. I hadn’t expected him to ask me to come sleep at his apartment tonight. I mean, yes, I loved sleeping in his arms, but no, I didn’t think we’d be doing that every night. It was sweet, I guess, but at the same time, he seemed a little… off.

Like maybe he was afraid I was going to take off at any second or something. I didn’t know what had changed when we were climbing, but something did. Maybe it was whatever Griffin had said to him while I was helping that little girl. I’d have to ask him about it once Aar left for work. Apparently the hospital was making him work a really short shift tonight because he’d worked so much overtime this month that they were going to get in trouble by the hospital CEO or something. This was obviously a common occurrence because Aaron said they always picked Wednesdays to shorten his shift since there was an extra doctor there that came over from another hospital.

He’d gone into detail about how understaffed they were and how he always got called in and everything. He’d named a bunch of people, but it was hard to keep track since I hadn’t met any of them yet. Then he’d told me that he wanted me to meet someone named Evelyn.

And then he’d given me a kiss and left for work.

Layla was on me immediately. “He’s gorgeous and so sweet.”

“He is, but you haven’t really talked to him much,” I said as I started working on my topper.

“He helped me before you guys left. And he did it without complaint, unlike some other people who shall remain nameless.”

I rolled my eyes at her and shook my head.

She didn’t care; she just kept going. “Griffin said that he seems sincere and that he really likes you. But he’s still a little worried.”

“Griffin’s always worried.”

“You know why.”

“Of course I do. He doesn’t need to be worried about Aaron, though. He’s a good guy and I’ve known him forever.”

“You haven’t seen him in twelve years,” she reminded me.

“He’s the same person, Layla. Just… older.”

She snorted at that, then the bell for the front door rang. “Dammit. This conversation isn’t over.” She rushed back out front.

I sighed.
